St. Paul of Vendaso - Fivizzano (Lunigiana)
The 'Pieve di San Paolo' stands alone along the road from Fivizzano and Verrucola towards the Cerreto Pass.
Probably it was one of the paths of the Via Francigena between the Lunigiana and Emilia.
A papal document certifies the existence since 1148. But would be enough the beautiful capitals to ensure that we are facing a authentic medieval masterpiece. The animals belong to a rich bestiary fantasy and meanings that have been lost over time.
Among them, the two-tails mermaid has a prominent place.
The simple and elegant two-tailed mermaid is present on three of the columns of the nave. Another, almost obliterated by time, can you guess outside of the main apse .
